Distinguish between peaceful protests and disruption of order

 Daily Monitor, January 20 2010

I read with great disappointment the Daily Monitor story “35 women arrested over anti-EC demo”. There is need to distinguish between a peaceful demonstration or expression of opinions and “disruption of law and order”.

Nothing in this story indicates that these women were doing anything illegal. I am of the opinion that these women were violently denied the freedom to express themselves peacefully, the police’s conduct was shameful and that the subsequent detentions of the women were unnecessary.

As a concerned Ugandan, I feel very strongly against state structures becoming torture tools against the people and I will continue to express myself unequivocally each time I feel that the structures that are supposed to protect the people have instead turned into their tormentors.

I grew up in a Uganda where we were terrified of state instruments. Decades later, it should not still be the same story.
